5 Tips for Leaders on Building Trust
Tip #1 Know the 5 Waves of Trust
Why? The key to understanding and learning to navigate the different levels of trust. It defines how to establish trust beginning with you.
Action Item: Wave 1: Self Trust-confidence you have in yourself. Wave 2: Relationship Trust-ability to generate trust with others to enhance relationships. Wave 3: Organizational Trust-alignment of leaders, structures, systems and symbols within the organization. Wave 4: Market Trust-about the brand and reputation built which reflects your customers, investors and others have about you and the organization. Wave 5: Societal Trust-creating value for others and society at large.
Tip #2 Starts with You
Why? To build trust with others, you must first begin with yourself.
Action Item: Ask yourself – Am I credible? Am I believable? Am I someone others (including myself) can trust? Begin with developing the 4 cores of credibility: Integrity, Intent, Capabilities and Results.
Tip #3 Make it Personal
Why? Your behavior as a leader in interacting with others will either increase trust or destroy it.
Action Item: Every interaction you have with someone, personally or professionally is a “moment of trust.” It has a ripple effect…”By behaving in ways that build trust with one, you build trust with many.”
Tip #4 Be Consistent in Your Behavior
Why? Your behavior matters. What you do has far greater impact than what you say. Your behavior must match the words you speak.
Action Item: Follow through and do what you say with validating actions to build trust. Your words become meaningless unless you demonstrate behavior consistent with the promise of your words.
Tip #5 Discover the 13 Behaviors all Leaders need to Master

Action Item: Talk Straight, Demonstrate Respect, Create Transparency, Right Wrongs, Show Loyalty and Deliver Results to name a few of the 13 Behaviors.
